Carla Martin-Wood is Copy Director of a large advertising agency. While she may sell her soul to the marketplace devils by day, at night, she redeems it again by writing poetry. Carla grew up enriched by the stories of her grandfather and the bohemian influence of her mother. She's lived all over the eastern half of the US, but has always felt more centered in the South, where she acquired a rich tapestry woven of experiences with her grandparents and their simple way of life. She is most at home in the mountains. Photography, birding and rockhounding are among Carla’s hobbies, and she loves a wide variety of music. Her favourite charity is St. Jude’s Hospital, and she always tries to get in a good word for them because they have made a great difference through research on childhood cancer, and they treat children regardless of the parents’ ability to pay. Twice nominated for The Pushcart Prize, Carla is the author of one full- length book of poems, Flight Risk (Fortunate Childe, 2009), and four chapbooks: Garden of Regret and Redheaded Stepchild, (both in the Pudding House Chapbook Series, 2009); Feed Sack Majesty (Fortunate Childe, 2009), and HerStory (Fortunate Childe, 2010). Her work appears in three anthologies: Love Poems & Other Messages for Bruce Springsteen and Casting the Nines (both Pudding House, 2009); and lilith. a collection of women's writes (Fortunate Childe, 2009). Carla's poems have been widely published in the US, UK, and Ireland since 1978, including Rosebud, Flutter, tinfoildresses, Elk River Review, The Lyric, The Foliate Oak, The Linnet’s Wings, Oak Bend Review, and many other journals. Carla first became intrigued with spoken word when a professor asked her to record books for the blind in high school. This led to her infatuation with recording and, later, with the stage. Now, with a 13-year background in theatre, Carla champions the spoken word, and has performed her work from The University of the South at Sewanee to Greenwich Village, and at many galleries, colleges, civic organizations and coffeehouses in between. She’s the barkeep at Smoky Joe’s Café, and she encourages others to appear as her guests. For more information, see her professional listing at Poets & Writers -- link below. |
